Scientists have worked for almost 60 years to create a malaria vaccine, we are finally there!

The World Health Organization (WHO) has recommended two vaccines for prevention of malaria in children – the RTS,S/AS01 vaccine and R21/Matrix-M, developed at the University of Oxford.

Both vaccines are shown to be safe and effective in preventing malaria in children and, when implemented broadly, are expected to have high public health impact.

Scientists at the Jenner Institute co-developed R21/Matrix-M vaccine. WHO pre-qualifications of R21/ Matrix-M vaccines were informed by studies led by KEMRI Wellcome Trust Research Programme (KWTRP).

The R21/MM malaria vaccine has been licensed for use in several African countries.
