This toolkit was written by Thrive, a community based organisation in the UK. It offers guidance to voluntary sector organisations and community groups about ways to engage with universities to build collaborative partnerships.

Working with universities can provide useful resources such as funding and facilities to voluntary sector organisations, and increasingly, universities understand that collaborations should be equal partnerships.

Before approaching a university, make sure you know what you want to get out of the partnership. The guide highlights the need to finalise timescales and costs before starting any work and the need for effective time management to prevent volunteers becoming overwhelmed over time.

The guide also outlines the principles of collaboration, especially the importance of honesty – don’t offer more than you can give, as partnerships are built on trust and knowing the capability of each other.
