This rapid review describes the literature for engagement and informed consent for adaptive and alternative trial designs in public health emergencies. It contrasts the approaches used for Ebola alternative design trials in west Africa, with adaptive trials for COVID-19. Whilst descriptions of approaches for Ebola are quite common, empirical research on engagement for both are lacking.
